What it means

Attrition is usually the number of employees who left in a period divided by the average headcount. It can be voluntary (resignation) or involuntary (termination, retirement). High attrition among top performers is a warning sign.

Benefits

  • Helps HR measure what matters.
  • Supports decisions with data, not guesses.
  • Spots problems early.
  • Makes HR reporting credible to leaders.

Example

  • 12 leavers from an average headcount of 100 in a year is 12% annual attrition.

Rates, limits, and rules (for example for pensions, social insurance, and end-of-service pay) differ by country and company and change over time. Treat these as general explanations and confirm the current position where you operate before relying on them.
