Benefits

  • Lowers stress and slows a racing heart.
  • Improves oxygen intake and lung capacity.
  • Releases tension in the neck and shoulders.
  • Prepares the mind for meditation or sleep.

Precautions - who should be careful

  • Breathe gently, never strain.
  • If you feel light-headed, pause and breathe normally.

Easier and deeper versions

  • Easier: lie on your back with knees bent.
  • Deeper: slightly lengthen the exhale to be twice as long as the inhale.

Do it at your desk

  • Place a hand on your belly and take five slow breaths before replying to a difficult email.

This is general wellness information, not medical advice. Practise gently and never force a pose or hold your breath. If you are pregnant, recovering from an injury, or have a medical condition such as high blood pressure, a heart, spine, or eye problem, check with your doctor and learn from a qualified teacher first.
