What it means

It is set in the employment contract - commonly 30 to 90 days - and lets the employer plan the handover. It may be shortened by mutual agreement or bought out with pay in lieu of notice.

Benefits

  • Sets clear expectations from day one.
  • Avoids disputes caused by misunderstandings.
  • Helps both sides plan.
  • Makes contracts easier to read.

Example

  • Resignation on 1 March with a 60-day notice period gives a last working day of 30 April.

Related terms

  • Buyout
  • Garden leave
  • Full and final settlement
  • Relieving letter

Rates, limits, and rules (for example for pensions, social insurance, and end-of-service pay) differ by country and company and change over time. Treat these as general explanations and confirm the current position where you operate before relying on them.
