How to play - step by step

  1. 1

Build the board: pick five categories such as Movies, Science, Sports, Office Life, and Geography.

  2. 2

Form teams; the first team is picked at random to start.

  3. 3

The team chooses a category and a point value, e.g. “Science for 300”.

  4. 4

The host reads the clue; the first team to buzz in gets to answer.

  5. 5

A correct answer wins the points; a wrong answer loses them and others may try.

  6. 6

Continue until the board is cleared, then play a final wager question.

Benefits

  • Builds teamwork by mixing people from different departments.
  • Shares knowledge in a fun, low-pressure way.
  • Rewards curiosity rather than seniority, so everyone can contribute.
  • Works in the office or online with almost no budget.

What you need

  • A board with 5 categories x 5 point values (100-500), on slides or a whiteboard.
  • 25 questions and answers, with the hardest at the 500-point level.
  • A buzzer, bell, or hand-raise rule, plus a scorekeeper.

Rules

  • Teams answer within five seconds of buzzing in.
  • The team that answered correctly picks the next clue.
  • A final question lets teams wager any of their points.

Scoring and winning

  • Points equal the value of the clue, won or lost.
  • The final wager can change the winner, so keep it exciting.

Variations

  • Make one category “Employees’ choice” with questions from the team.
  • Add “Daily Double” squares that let a team double their wager.
  • Use a template slide deck for quick setup.

Playing it online

  • Show the board on screen share and assign a team captain to “buzz” via chat.
  • Use the chat timestamps to decide who responded first.

Tips for the host

  • Appoint a referee separate from the host.
  • Keep a few spare questions for tiebreakers.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Questions that are too hard at every level - build a ladder from easy to difficult.
  • Unclear buzzing rules - agree on them before you begin.
  • Making it too long; 25 clues is plenty.
